Having spent far to long of my life doing little and not really getting anywhere I have decided that it's time to travel and do something meaningful with my time. Imspired in part by my sisters "i'm getting the fuck out of here come hell or high water" approach to life, I have decided that some major dustups are in order. Caution precedes all, however; and while I would love to just go get a motorcycle and call it done I feel that some longer distance travel is in order.

Enter the Peace Corps. Founded a long time ago by some guy who thought that social programs for other countries would be a fantastic idea, a bunch of moderately well educated young people go out and test their hands in foreign lands for meager pay and a chance at actually living life for something possibly important. It's like the US Army (which you should know about if you haven't lived in a hole all your life) except with less guns, a slightly shorter service term, worse educational benefits, less brainwashing and probably the equal in sexual innuendos.

So, yeah. I am going to start looking into joining up because it's probably the best way I can go about traveling to foreign countries and helping people. My natal chart does major casting towards travel both of the mind and body into foreign areas so I feel that this is an inevitable outcome. Simply put: I need to go travel. To find a place that I can call home I simply must get out there and GO.

i applaud. i do. jerrod and i were debating about the peace corps as well (to go with anyone else and be in the same platoon whatever you have to be married and not have kids.)

peace corps will give you something like 6k$ on your return too. try to get some of the more civilized countries, like germany.

i would like to see you before you end up headed out of the country though so maybe you can head up this way first? or if you don't head out till next year i'm sure i'll be back thru texas once we get our vehicle.

i think you'd get a lot of gratification out of it. i am really, really glad to see you're not planning on spending forever in texas. :P

It depends on if they'll even have me. Fortunately I have some experience in skilled trades so that will work to my advantage. We'll have to see. Mom is raising a small fuss about it, "Somebody's got to look after you!" were her exact words. I'm going over there tomorrow to spend more time convincing her of the realistic opportunities and essentially tell her to get it in her head that I've moved out and gotta go my own way.

My chances of heading in that direction are fairly low. Application process takes between 9-12 months before you leave the country. I imagine that there may be a chance that I'll be up that way but several things would have to come together first:

You have a place for me to stay.
I have the funding for such a venture
I am not in a position where outlying obligations prevent me from doing so.

A lot of stuff needs to happen between now and then. Of course, this is assuming that the program will even take me. Mom wants to tryn and get me to stay in the States with Americorps, but to fuck with that. She doesn't quite seem to understand that I want to be outside the states experiencing different cultures and being put into a situation where I am forced to learn different languages to survive.

Americorps isn't that bad. And I wanted to mention to you (I mentioned it to her too so expect to hear about it..) that when Jerrod was calling around regarding the PC, he spoke with someone and the information he gathered was basically because there is SUCH a high demand to be in the PC that there is a sort of almost-unstated rule that you have to have a college degree. You have to have some sort of skill to bring along. If you had a certificate in your trade that might help a lot. I believe he told me there are only two or three 'uneducated' positions open, grunt work shit (which is fine w/ you or me) but they put people w/ degrees in those positions too, just because they seem to be better qualified. I don't mean to not try to get in, and if you start the process now you might be in a really good state when it does roll around, but you might want to do some calling to real people (vs internet) and see if that's really the case.

remember that small farmers journal we used to get? i seem to remember trade/work/boarding classifieds in there, inviting people to go experience different cultures like that and working and having board and stuff. there are a lot of different opportunities if you're willing to check weird places.

we're not getting an apartment here (or anywhere in the forseeable future.) i do have a hookup at the hotel we stayed at and i'm sure i could get you a good deal.. and sure, funding is completely understandable. also i figure you have to finish your lease and stuff. but you should keep me/us/livejournal updated on your research in this subject, your progress, what you're leaning towards. i am excited for you! i really want to know if you find something awesome i might be able to get involved in too. :)
